WHEN THE LIQUID first trickled down her legs, transforming her polyester bell-bottoms into a weightier, slicker material and pasting them uncomfortably to the inside of her thighs, Frances thought she'd lost control of her bladder. A flush of shame and incredulity crept up her neck to her face. She was at Color Me Happy, the paint store near the old depot picking out the color for the baby's room. The owner of the store stood behind the checkout counter showing Frances sample colors on strips of cardboard. In the middle of explaining that the Moonlit Moss was a shade too sophisticated, but she didn't want something as garish as Spring Grass, and wasn't there anything in between, Frances stopped mid-sentence. She looked down at the small but ever expanding puddle at her feet and lost her train of thought. "Give me three cans of Spring Grass," she said in a panic. She realized her water had broken, which called to mind, within a flurry of unrelated images, a water balloon, of a bright cardinal-red, and then a needle piercing its taut rubber skin and the ensuing gush. Except there'd been no needle, just the gush, followed by a steady trickle.
